Otley Golf Club’s Phil Tomkinson won the prestigious Hawksworth Trophy last Saturday – a 36-hole strokeplay competition at Bradford Golf Club for the leading amateurs in the north of England.
Last year’s club junior captain returned a two-round gross score of six-under-par 136 on a day when the early starters found the playing conditions far from conducive for low scoring.
In fact, from a first-round competition scratch score of 73 (standard scratch score 71) mainly due to the wet start, the day improved so much so that the second round competition scratch score was 71.
In an excellent competition, where the changing weather produced many different scores, Phil finished four shots ahead of nearest rival, Andy Jones from Moortown, and six ahead of Bingley St Ives’ Andy Town on 142.
Tomkinson said: “The Hawksworth Trophy proved once again to be a challenging competition for the region’s top players, and I am al-ready looking forward to defending the trophy in 2015.”
