A TRIO of orienteers from Ilkley achieved a class win in the 2014 British Orienteering Long Distance and Relay Championships in Northumbria last weekend.
Facing 40 other teams, Adrian Hall and the two Ilkley Grammar School students, Laura King and Matthew Hall won the Mixed Ad Hoc class.
The three runners tackled long, medium or short legs totalling 10.4 kilometres.
All of them kept cool heads to earn Airienteers first place on Sunday – the second day of competition.
Saturday’s individual long-distance races proved extremely physical. The terrain included a rock escarpment covered in energy-sapping bilberry followed by forest with tricky under-foot conditions.
Exhausted competitors had just one night to recover before Sunday’s relay competition on completely contrasting terrain.
The Cragg Estate and Chesterhope Common saw running on lightning fast grassland but with significant navigational challenge .
Airienteers’ own Wednesday Evening Summer Sprint Orienteering series commences on June 11. Later in July, the Fat Rascal Races include a chasing sprint race at Beckett Park plus urban orienteering in Otley. Further details at http://www.aire.org.uk
