Yorkshire’s senior team lined up again old rivals Lancashire at Selby knowing that they had not beaten their close rivals in a Northern Counties League match since 2011 after being narrowly defeated in the corresponding fixture last season at Pleasington Golf Club.
This rather depressing set of facts didn’t seem to affect the team in any way, however, as they raced to a commanding 4.5 points to 1.5 points lead at lunch with Ilkley member Jack Lampkin making a significant contribution courtesy of a morning foursomes win with partner Ben Sardo (Moor Allerton GC) when they defeated their Lancashire opponents on the last green.
In the afternoon singles Jack once again showed fine form win a 2 holes win against experienced Lancashire player Michael Hunt from Pleasington Golf Club, to record a 100 per cent winning record on the day.
Yorkshire ran out as overall winners by 11 points to 7 which puts them firmly in the driving seat this season in pursuit of their first League title since 2010 following on from their win in the first match of the season against Durham at Fulford.
In the next round of matches, Yorkshire have an away fixture on the 12th July against Cumbria at Workington Golf Club whilst Lancashire will have to pick up the pieces and try to return to winning ways as they take on Durham at Preston Golf Club.
