Skyrac Athletic Club's young middle distance athletes ran in the Leeds Schools Cross-Country trials bidding for places to represent Leeds at next month's West Yorkshire Schools' Championships.

The Yeadon-based club's young athletes were running on their home course in Nunroyd Park, Yeadon, and an amazing ten of them gained places in the Leeds team.

They were led by Rebecca Harrison of Menston St Mary's School who ran a solid race to win the girls under-16s on the two lap parkland course.

Jemima Edwards of Guiseley School also ran well to place fifth in the Under-16s race with Rebecca's twin Bethany Harrison also of Menston St Mary's sixth and Laura Griggs of Guiseley School eighth, all gaining places in the Leeds team.

In the junior girls' race Pippa Cox of Otley's Prince Henry's Grammar School, ran a committed race to finish fourth and gain selection along with fourth placed Rebecca Whitfield, also of Prince Henry's, who was sixth and Rochelle Bullock, another Prince Henry's runner, who finished ninth.

The junior boys' race was won by Skyrac's Joe Morley, the Leeds Grammar School pupil running a good race.

Michael Hinchcliffe of Prince Henry's GS ran strongly over the two laps to place fourth and also gain selection for the Leeds team.

One of the best performance of the day by a Skyrac athlete came in the best race of the day, the girls' under-12s, where Kate Walsh of Benton Park School, Rawdon, ran strongly for two laps to place second.

Other members of Skyrac who ran well on the day for their schools were Rachel Turner and Grace Goodall.

This weekend will see the Bradford Schools Cross-Country Championships in which Skyrac will be well represented.
