ILKLEY Grammar School student Laura King won her class trophy at the 2015 British Night Orienteering Championships held in Middleton Park, South Leeds.
Hosted by local orienteering club, Airienteers, this is the premier national test of night navigation and running.
Nearly 300 runners competed in a variety of age classes.
Laura, 15, ran her five kilometre course in just over 43 minutes. The terrain varied from fast open golf course to complex oak woodland with holly thickets and sunken bell pits. It made navigation difficult by day and very challenging at night.
Airienteers saw four club members win podium positions. Tony Thornley (Ilkley) took third place on the M65L course whilst Peter Haines (Ilkley) and Joe Woodley (Guiseley / Sheffield University) took silver in their respective classes of M60L and M20L.
Having won the junior women's class in this year's Yorkshire & Humber Night Orienteering League, Laura was delighted to win the W16 class trophy at the national championships.
As winter and dark recede, local orienteers are looking forward to a training weekend in Cumbria in preparation for the JK International Orienteering Festival in the Lake District at Easter.
More locally, Airienteers is organising a middle distance orienteering event in Calverley Woods followed by the regular Spring and Summer Sprint Orienteering Leagues. Further details at: http://www.aire.org.uk/index.asp
