BEN Rhydding’s under-16 boys reached the semi-final stage of the Yorkshire Youth Hockey League Division One play-offs
Although the team could not go all the way to the final, victories over Driffield, Sheffield Hallam and Slazengers saw Ben Rhydding boys impress.
In their opening game, goalkeeper Sam Pilling kept out two shots from a Driffield penalty corner, before Ben Rhydding broke out.
Joe Braithwaite set up Charlie Day for the only goal of the tie.
The team followed up with a 4-0 win over Sheffield with goals from Tommy Hagan, Braithwaite, Jacob Dawson and Barnaby Walsh.
Ben Rhydding ensured a first-placed finish in their group with another 4-0 win, this time over Slazengers.
The hosts went in front as Tom Eaglesfield struck from a penalty corner, before Eaglesfield turned provider for Mark Horsman’s goal.
Dawson’s pass set up a third, scored by Day, and after soaking up a spell of pressure, Horsman added his team’s fourth.
Ben Rhydding were undone in the semi-final, however, as they went down 2-1 to Wakefield.
Wakefield’s early strike was cancelled out by Ollie Kelt’s effort, but after a well-drilled drag flick put their opponents back in front, Ben Rhydding could not respond.
