HORSFORTH are celebrating after winning their first match since 2020.
After what has been a torrid time both on and off the pitch for the Leeds outfit, they overcame Division 3 Old Leodiensians by 46 runs at King George’s Field to progress to the second round of the Waddilove Cup.
Their 228-6 was largely down to Harry Jeavons (95) and skipper Jonathon Lister (43 not out), with Jeavons and Danny Taylor picking up three wickets apiece to bowl the visitors out for just 182.
Division 3 leaders Kirkstall Educational claimed a surprise 21-run win at home to Addingham, who sit third in Division 1.
Chris Robinson (4-31) and Ted Haggas (4-34) looked to have given the visitors the upper hand after bowling Kirkstall out for a below-par 164.
However, ‘Dingham could not perform with the bat either, Will Atkins top-scoring with 24 as Wahab Hussain (4-38) and Mustapha Hussain (3-17) took control with the ball to see them fall narrowly short of their target.
The other giant-killing came at the Richmond Oval, with newly-promoted New Rover falling at the first hurdle against Division 3 strugglers Alwoodley.
Batting first, the visitors made a competitive 267, a total largely down to Harry Slater (78) and Will Jackson (59) as the economical Jonathan Postle took 4-27.
Despite putting on 80 for the first, the hosts lost their wickets cheaply, falling to 89-4 and then 127-8. Change bowler Guy Hales (5-25) cleaned up with the ball as they were bowled out for just 173.
Saltaire are also out of the competition after falling to a six-wicket defeat at home to Division 2 Tong Park Esholt.
Josh Bennett and David Hester picked up three wickets apiece as the hosts were bowled out for just 180, a total that Esholt reached in the penultimate over thanks to a 110-run partnership between Fawad Maqsood (63) and Saqib Mir (60).
Holders Rawdon are on track to retain the cup, with Joe Smith (45 not out) performing with the bat as they claimed a four-wicket win at fellow Division 1 side Burley-in-Wharfedale.
Stephen Brown took 3-20 before scoring an unbeaten 88 as Otley chased down Adel’s 186 in the 38th over, while wicketkeeper Will Spivey (68 no) batted the entirety of Ilkley’s innings as they cruised past Leeds Modernians by seven wickets with almost half their overs remaining.
Collingham & Linton’s strong start to the league season continued, with a 116-run partnership between skipper Jonathan Haslem (53) and Gregory Brown (65) seeing them post 221-7, a total they defended by 50 runs.
Green Lane bounced back from a disappointing defeat at Pool after chasing down Harden’s 243 with just 11 balls remaining at the Cuckoo’s Nest.
Harden captain Andy Wear (73) and Tom Stordy (64) added over half of those runs as the visitors’ seven bowlers struggled to make inroads, but a quick-fire 47 not out from middle-order Tahzeeb Arshad was enough to see Green Lane over the line.
Fifties from Joe Holderness and Peter Hotchkiss saw Beckwithshaw progress to the next round after a high-scoring match at home to Olicanian, despite a 74-run partnership between Tom Starkey (22) and Harry Smallwood (49) putting them under real pressure.
Elsewhere, Yasar Ali’s outstanding 111 from just 86 deliveries was not enough as Follifoot were beaten by four wickets in a high-scoring match at North Leeds, while Horsforth Hall Park’s nine bowlers proved effective in their five-wicket win at Division 3 Skipton.
With Pool and Bilton both scoring 192 all out, the match went to a super over, with the visitors comfortably progressing to the next round.
Ryan Bradshaw and Russel Robshaw hit a boundary each as Bilton set a marker of 13-0 from their six balls, a total that Pool never came close to, with both Rob Goldthorp and Krutik Patel falling victim to Luke Jarvis in their chase.
Steeton were the big scorers at home to Guiseley, with openers Jamie Robinson (68) and Jack Ramage (55) backed up by captain Stevie Pearson (59) as they posted 305-6.
Middle-order Callum Hayes (55 no) top-scored for the visitors, but they could only manage 232-6 in reply.
In the only other matches, Calverley St Wilfrids chased down St Chads Bromfield’s 248-7 for the loss of two wickets thanks to the impressive Ed Whittingham (120 no), while Azad Yaqub (51) starred as Bolton Villas needed just 14 overs to reach their 107 target at Thackley. REPORT BY: EMMA KENNEDY
