HAVING pulled the game around in the second half, Otley lost out to Hull RUFC in the dying moments when they conceded a penalty try.
Both teams had a number of new debutants, Hull left it late, clinching the win in the dying moments. They took an early lead with two penalties through Reece Dean, before Gavin Stead got one for Otley on 20 minutes. Ten minutes later Joe Barratt went over to the left of the posts for Hull. Just as the half was coming to an end, Eddie Crossland kicked a 50-22, Otley then moved the ball across the pitch getting a penalty, and Crossland’s quick tap and go saw him over the line. Stead converted.
Maintaining the momentum, Stead got another penalty in the second before Ryan Gibson brushed off tackles to score. A 9-10-11 combination saw Hudson-Kowalewicz score with Dean restoring the balance for Hull. Adam Malthouse scored under the posts for Otley with 15 minutes to go, and then Jack Baldry scored for Hull straight afterwards, both tries were converted.
Both sides had opportunities to score but it was Hull’s hooker, Mike Jobling, speedy run to the line after some good play by Hull, that gave them their first win in over a year. A deliberate knock on by Otley brought them a yellow card and Hull were awarded a penalty try in what was a tight game, as the visitors ran out 32-27 winners.
