IT’S been a busy month for Fergus Smith who has ended the nineteen-fight unbeaten run of Southport's Luis Wright to win the WMO British Pro Am 52 kilo title just three weeks after winning Gold at the WBC Amateur Championships in Bangkok.
Smith, 17, who fights out of Bad Company gym in east Leeds owned by his parents, was the underdog ahead of the bout, with Wright having ended ten of his previous wins by knee stoppage.
“I knew he was a pressure fighter and I had to be fit and switched on for all five rounds of the ten-minute bout,” explained the 17-year-old.
Whilst Wright was tough, he was no match for Smith’s skill giving the Horsforth School sixth former a comfortable win.
“I was surprised how quickly I worked him out and enjoyed putting on an exciting show for the crowd. It was an amazing show to fight on. We had seven fighters from Bad Company competing and six wins. The whole production was next level as it is linked to Sky Sports ONE Championship.”
The fight took place on Liam Harrison's 'Hitman Promotions' at Bowlers Exhibition Centre, Manchester. Harrison is an eight-time world champion who also trained at Bad Company.
Smith has been training since he was six and hasn't lost a UK fight since he was eight. He is hoping to fight for a European Pro-Am title on the next Hitman Promotions.
He is eager to be a professional Muay Thai fighter and potential sponsors should contact Richard Smith on 07885 270267 or Bad Company Gym to arrange an initial discussion.
