MENSTON Fourths are one of four unbeaten teams in the John Clayton Cup after two rounds of the Timothy Taylor’s Craven League secondary 40-overs-per-side competition.

They elected to field at the Airedale Oval and dismissed the hosts for just 51 in 34.1 overs, despite experienced openers Trevor Cox and Tim Crossley both scoring 16 in a partnership of 33.

Owen Pothecary, the sixth bowler used, was chiefly responsible for the collapse, the 17-year-old taking 6-10 in 6.1 overs, although he was aided by 13-year-old newcomer Sam Dowsland, who took a miserly 2-3 from his five overs.

Menston were then indebted to their skipper David Holder, who made 34 not out, the other five batters scoring only 14 between them in a six-wicket victory.

The fifth team from High Royds had a tough nut to crack at home to last year’s runners-up Hepworth & Idle II in a T20 Cowling Cup group game.

The Westfield Laners were sent in and made 111-5, with 13-year-old Henry Dodgson taking 3-17 from four overs on debut.

Menston were then toppled for 62, with only skipper and keeper Keith Texel (24) making double figures.
